Any game in any sport between Duke and North Carolina is meaningful, with the two longtime and heated rivals squaring off for bragging rights and a much-needed feeling of superiority.
When the Blue Devils and Tar Heels’ women’s basketball team meet this week, though, the stakes will be just a little bit higher.

No. 2 seed Duke and No. 3 seed North Carolina will square off Friday in Birmingham, Alabama in the Sweet 16 of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight and getting one step closer to its dreams of a Final Four and a national championship.
It will be the third meeting between the teams this season, with the Tar Heels winning 53-46 in overtime in Chapel Hill on Jan. 9 and the Blue Devils returning the favor a month-and-a-half later in Durham in a 68-53 victory on Feb. 27. The winner of the decisive third matchup will advance to take on No. 1 seed South Carolina or No. 4 seed Maryland in the national quarterfinals.
