Texas A&M's 2025 spring season will end after Saturday's Maroon & White spring game. While it's difficult to note if any real progress has been made, players like starting quarterback Marcel Reed, running back Rueben Owens, and wide receiver KC Concepcion will be in the spotlight. The defensive line depth issues, combined with new members in the secondary, will also be evaluated.
However, this is just a sample of what to expect during the 2025 season. With the spring transfer portal set to open today (Wednesday), head coach Mike Elko and his staff will be vigilant. They know that adding depth at several positions, especially the defensive line, is crucial to avoiding issues in the middle of the season. Last offseason, Elko had to build his 2025 roster from scratch through the transfer portal, so he understands the process ahead of him.
Texas A&M's 2025 roster is near the scholarship limit, but as we've seen after most spring games, players may leave or even retire early, opening up spots for one of two depth pieces to feel safe heading into the 2025 season. Here are the top positions needing additions from the spring transfer portal.
Texas A&M's cornerback rotation starts and ends with senior Will Lee III. In contrast, the return of fellow senior Tyreek Chappell is equally essential to solidify what was a shaky unit last season. From the transfer portal, corners Julian Humphrey (Georgia) and Jordan Shaw (Washington) provide depth and experience but, like most cornerbacks, struggle in various technical aspects of the position.
Next up, Jayvon Thomas and Dezz Ricks, who struggled during his first entire collegiate season, will need to improve to provide depth. Outside of those two names, adding one more veteran player with versatility not only provides depth but could vie for added playing time to take pressure off of the starting unit.
This offseason, veteran wide receiver Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia. After the Aggies landed KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the portal, it was clear that OC Collin Klein was looking to emphasize speed over size, meaning fewer red zone targets without Thomas's presence.
After it was reported that Elko offered former 6'5" Campbell wide receiver Sincere Brown, he has since committed to Colorado and could end up being the tallest wideout to enter the portal. The Aggies need a 6'4" or 6'5" target for Marcel Reed to not just target in the red zone, but push the ball downfield at a higher rate. We shall see if that type of player enters the portal this week.
The No. 1 area of need, Texas A&M's lack of depth at defensive tackle will force redshirt freshman Dealyn Evans and freshman DL DJ Sanders to play more snaps than Elko would like if they can't add another big body inside, as DJ Hicks and Albert Regis will both be depended on to stop the run and provide some interior pass rush. However, the Aggies did add former Iowa State Tyler Onyedim, who should give versatility inside.
Overall, defensive tackle is a challenging position to fill in the spring portal, and when a good one enters, Texas A&M will be battling with every team in the country for that player's commitment. Still, Texas A&M's history of developing defensive linemen is a solid recruiting pitch for veterans, so this isn't impossible, but it will depend on the type of players that enter. If Elko opts not to add another defensive lineman, he will have to rely on what he has and likely be creative once SEC play begins.
Texas A&M could also use a swing tackle for insurance behind left tackle Trey Zuhn III, but overall, Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing likely feel good about where they stand in the offensive trenches.
