The future of the Protect College Sports Act was put in doubt once again this week, with a handful of senators pushing amendments to the bill that could prolong the legislative process.
On Thursday, Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), filed an amendment that would prevent the PCSA from overruling any existing state laws barring transgender women from participating in women’s sports.
On Friday, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported that Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), had filed three amendments, including one that would allow Power Four schools to change conferences without penalty for the first 180 days after the bill’s enactment. The original text of the bill would force Power Four schools to go independent for five years before moving to a new conference.
Also on Friday, Semafor’s Burgess Everett reported that Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), was considering filing an amendment that would block schools from increasing ticket prices by more than 4% each year. Additionally, Kennedy told reporters he wanted to ensure the PCSA doesn’t “absolve the NCAA, which lacks testicles and a spine, of any liability.” (That has to be a contender for the best quote this saga has generated.)
