What's next for Jaylen Brown? Celtics have entered their Maxx Crosby era after failed Giannis trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Boston Celtics were ready to trade Jaylen Brown.

They wanted Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, and reports indicated that Brown and multiple first-round picks were being offered by the Celtics to try and get it done.

In the end, the Bucks chose the Miami Heat's offer instead. The Celtics didn't pull off the trade.

That leaves Boston and Brown in at least a slightly awkward position. It's not unlike Maxx Crosby, the NFL superstar who the Las Vegas Raiders appeared to trade to the Baltimore Ravens only to have that deal fall through. Crosby is currently lined up to play in 2026 for Vegas.

Only Brown truly knows how he himself feels, but it's going to be a fascinating storyline to watch.

Brown isn't a guarantee to be traded now. In fact, many indications suggested that Brown isn't really on the block, but rather was only going to be used if it meant the Celtics could end up with Giannis.

There had been recent rumors of the Portland Trail Blazers wanting Brown, but the Celtics wouldn't be able to get a player anywhere near Antetokounmpo's level from a deal with the Blazers, and so that might be more of one-sided interest.

The thing everyone will be watching is Brown himself -- whether on social media, or one of his live streams, or in some other kind of public or cryptic comment.

He probably can rationalize why the Celtics wanted Giannis. It's also probably tough to deal with the fact that they were open to trading him after he's spent his whole career there, including a championship.

Brown could decide this makes him want out, and request a trade. He could also give Boston the benefit of the doubt and choose to stick around to compete some more with Jayson Tatum.

If Brown requests a trade, it could create a fascinating bidding war, particularly among the other teams that missed out on Giannis.

At this point, though, the Celtics would probably like to keep their core intact.
