Ahead of that year's NHL entry draft, Harlow, then the head coach of the South Shore Kings junior hockey club, raved about a young Charlie Coyle, telling The Patriot Ledger, "Whoever gets him is going to get a guy who’ll play a long time in the NHL."
Coyle, who will turn 34 in March, went on to prove him correct.
The 14-year veteran center from Weymouth was honored in a ceremony for recently playing in his 1,000th career game in the league before scooping up a goal and assist in his Columbus Blue Jackets' 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at home on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Coyle is one of 416 players in NHL history to reach the milestone, according to the league records.
In his first campaign with the Blue Jackets, Coyle ranks third on the team in points with 12 goals and 23 assists.
He was dealt from his hometown Bruins to the Colorado Avalanche at last year's trade deadline, ending the six-year tenure in Boston. Colorado subsequently traded his expiring contract to Columbus in the offseason. He is in the final year of a six-year, $31.5 million contract.
Coyle was joined by parents Chuck and Theresa, his wife Danielle and daughter Lilia on the ice for the pregame ceremony. To mark the milestone, Coyle was presented with a commemorative 'Silver Stick' from the franchise, and a Tiffany crystal from the league.
Then, just 38 seconds into the game, Coyle sprung free from the pack to receive a dish from Jack Christensen and score.
“I’m just glad everything is over with, honestly,” Coyle said via a release from the team. “It’s funny the way it works sometimes, but I was on the end of a pretty good shift and play by my teammates. It’s nice to help contribute. I’m wondering if my parents made it up to their seats yet or not. I’ll have to ask them later.”
Coyle has amassed 201 goals and 319 assists throughout his 14-year career with stints playing for the Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets.
Coyle was a first-round pick (28th overall) of the San Jose Sharks in 2010 via Thayer Academy, Weymouth High and later Boston University.
