Westlake High became the first Ventura County team to play for a CIF-Southern Section championship in flag football on Nov. 8 in Orange.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, their historic run to the Division 2 final did not end with a title.

Freshman Annabel O’Keefe threw two touchdown passes and had an end-zone interception, but Westlake fell to Corona del Mar 26-14 at El Modena High’s Fred Kelly Field.

“The frustrating part is I don’t know if that’s our best game of the playoffs, but it is what it is,” said Westlake coach Mike Eames. “You have to give some of that to the other team.”

With just 12 players on its roster, Westlake (17-7) beat Mater Dei (32-8), Beckman (20-6), Downey (18-12 in five OTs), and Upland (12-6) to reach the final.

Led by quarterback Addison Stern, Corona del Mar (18-14) added the Warriors to the list of local teams it had eliminated on its postseason run, including Agoura, Ventura and Newbury Park.

“We’re all trying to figure it out, too,” Eames said. “They capitalized when teams make mistakes. They know what they are. They have a quarterback who is unorthodox, but she’s an athlete who makes people miss. She gave us some trouble.”

Stern threw two TD passes and ran for two scores as Corona del Mar built a 26-7 lead entering the fourth quarter.

O’Keefe’s 22-yard TD pass to Kate Janowicz pulled Westlake even 7-7 late in the first quarter.

"I was happy about that," Eames said. "They score and we turn around and answer. That was good."

O’Keefe’s 32-yard TD pass to Livvie Elsokary pulled the Warriors within 26-14 with 9:30 to play.

With only two seniors on its roster, Westlake will return the core of its team for the fourth season of high school flag football next fall, including stars O'Keefe, Elsokary, Janowicz and Summer Davis.

"You want to savor those chances, but it's only the beginning," Eames said.
