Western Michigan has fired head men's basketball coach DJ Stephens after four seasons,
Athletic director Dan Bartholomae informed the players in a team meeting on campus Sunday morning, ahead of an official announcement by the university.
Stephens, 54, had two years left on the contract he signed after landing his first head-coaching job in 2022, following a long and revered run as an assistant coach under Tom Izzo at Michigan State.
But the Broncos never found their footing during his tenure. Western Michigan never had more than 12 wins, and this season, the Broncos were 10-21 and failed to make the Mid-American Conference tournament.
Western Michigan was 9-9 in the MAC the previous two seasons, but fell to 4-14 this season.
In his four seasons, Western Michigan was 42-84.
Stephens was on Izzo's staff from 2003-22, rising to one of the most-respected assistant coaches in the game, while turning down several head-coaching opportunities to stick with Michigan State. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Marquette and Oakland. He played collegiately at Michigan State.
