NORTH PROVIDENCE – West Warwick wasted no time making its case for title contender status in Division II baseball this season.
The Wizards opened the campaign with an impressive road victory over North Providence, the defending champion who lived up to its No. 1 seed last June at Rhode Island College.
Jack Proulx was in command on the mound and Nick Andruchow sparked the offense early. West Warwick kept adding on in the late innings and pulled away for an 11-0 shutout of the Cougars.
Proulx allowed just a walk and an infield single through six strong frames to pick up the win. Andruchow cracked a two-run homer in the top of the first to help set the tone, and that was all the support his pitching staff needed. The Wizards finally blew open a 3-0 game with six runs in the top of the sixth.
“We’re just like glue,” Proulx said. “We’re all so close. We hang out outside of baseball. We train together. We work out together.”
West Warwick entered the season with some expected front-line pitching in St. John’s commit Anthony Burt and Exeter-West Greenwich transfer Kole Kilduff. Proulx looked like much more than just a depth option in this outing, working ahead frequently and setting down the first 10 men he faced. Carter Harris drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth and Tyler Linehan beat out a soft single back to the mound to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
“He’s just very dialed in,” Andruchow said. “He’s looking to get ahead every pitch.”
Proulx enjoyed a 2-0 lead before he threw a pitch on a sunny, breezy early evening. Jair Blanco reached on a fielder’s choice and Andruchow smoked a drive to deep right-center that crashed into the shrubbery behind the chain-link fence. He was running hard out of the box and only pulled up after hearing a cheer go up from the visiting dugout.
“I thought it was going to be a little short,” Andruchow said. “I was flying around second.”
Andruchow added a run-scoring single to right in the fifth before the Wizards delivered the knockout against Alex Dieffenbach. Charlie Brown sent another RBI single to right, Luke Gallo beat out an infield RBI single to short and Kilduff supplied the final key blow with a two-run single up the middle. West Warwick (1-0) owned a 9-0 lead and total command.
