Apr. 4—TRINITY — Year 2 for Bobby Meyer at West Morgan brought a lot of expectations.

In year one, Meyer took over a boys basketball team that was fresh off a surprise run to the Elite Eight and went right back. With the bulk of the roster back this year, including stars Landon Henderson and Keelan Murphy, expectations were the Rebels could improve on last year's 19-9 record.

They did just that. Meyer, who has been named the Class 1A-4A Decatur Daily Boys Coach of the Year, led them to a 25-7 season and back to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive season. West Morgan also won the Morgan County championship and the Class 4A, Area 13 championship.

"We played at a high level the entire year, a level that we expect to play at," Meyer said. "We were disappointed because we felt like we were a Final Four team, and that was the one goal we didn't reach, but it was still a great year."

In Year 1, Meyer implemented his "Fast 32" style of play, which sees his team push the pace the full length of the floor for the entire game. However, in the postseason, the Rebels slowed it down to find success as the team was still adjusting to the new system.

This year the team felt more comfortable in the style, and Meyer credits that for the increase in wins.

"It takes time to learn that style because you have to understand the pace and build a mentality to play it," Meyer said. "The first year we fought against tendencies and we had to build depth. This year we had the depth and we showed growth."'

Of course, the season didn't end the way West Morgan wanted, losing by a single point in the Elite Eight to rival Deshler. The Rebels are losing five seniors, including two starters, but with star players like Henderson and Brendan Bradford returning, the team feels they will eventually break down that barrier and reach the school's first Final Four since 1972.

"We're losing some keys guys that were valuable to our program, but we have a good group of seniors coming up and some young guys that we feel like are going to step up," Meyer said. "It's going to be tough with a new area and new classification because the 5A state champion and another Final Four team are coming to 4A. But we played a lot of tough competition this year, and our expectations of reaching a Final Four are going to remain the same."
