Wes Welker says he loves the Washington Commanders' receivers room.
Welker, a Commanders' offensive assistant coach, certainly knows much about playing receiver in the NFL. Welker was good enough at it to play in the league for 12 seasons. Most of all, Welker led the NFL in receptions for three seasons. He did so without leading the NFL in targets in any of those three seasons.
Now he is assisting (wide receivers coach) Bobby Engram, coaching receivers in Washington, hoping to help build a solid, productive NFL offense. "I'm trying to help the team wherever that is," expressed Welker. "Helping DQ (Dan Quinn) and David Blough, just trying to make this the best offense we can."
In part of the interview, Welker was very hesitant, or perhaps cautious, about overly praising rookie receiver Antonio Williams. Welker even answered one question about Williams, stating that making the adjustment to being an NFL receiver is one of the hardest ones to make.
However, in a matter of seconds, Welker also declared, "I love this receiver room. We have a lot of talented guys. Different sizes, different skill sets, I think they all complement each other really well. They are all working hard; they are really fun to be around."
Consequently, perhaps Welker was attempting to be fair to present both sides of what he is feeling in working with this receiver group. Perhaps he didn't want to err on one side or the other, and simply felt the need to express some of the learning needed by Williams while also vocalizing his excitement for the group as a whole as well.
In addition, it's still so early. Welker will know more about these guys once the pads are on in training camp. The more actual football they play in football equipment, Welker will know better what the group is and can be this season.
