A former North Carolina player is returning to the state, this time as a head coach.

Charlotte announced Monday morning that it has hired Wes Miller as its head coach on a five-year deal. Miller spent the previous 15 seasons as head coach at UNC Greensboro and Cincinnati.

"Wes Miller is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the game and strong ties to basketball in our state," athletic director Kevin White said in a statement. "Throughout this process, what stood out most was his passion, competitive energy, and clear vision for building a championship culture here at Charlotte."

Miller was most recently the head coach at Cincinnati from 2021 to 2026, where he had a 100-74 record. He was fired earlier this month after failing to make the NCAA Tournament, something the Bearcats did not do during his tenure despite two 20-win seasons.

Miller had much more success at his previous stop at UNC Greensboro, where he was head coach for 10 seasons, compiling an overall record of 185-135 and emerging as one of the top mid-major coaches. In his final five seasons, Miller went 125-43 with three Southern Conference regular-season championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Given his track record in the state as both a former UNC player and a successful head coach at UNC Greensboro, it’s a strong move for the 49ers.

"This is a university with tremendous momentum, a passionate city behind it, and deep basketball roots in the state of North Carolina," Miller said in a statement. "... We're going to pour everything we have into developing our student-athletes, competing at the highest level, and building a team that our campus and this city are proud to rally around. The foundation is here for something special, and I can't wait to get to work because Charlotte's stock is rising."

Miller played for North Carolina from 2003 to 2007 and was a member of the 2005 national championship team. He originally transferred from James Madison, where he played in 2002-03, before coming to Carolina after Roy Williams took over as head coach in 2003.

Miller replaces Aaron Fearne, who was fired last week after three seasons at the helm. Fearne finished with a 47-51 record, and the 49ers went 17-17 this season.
