Wendy’s wasted no time jumping into NFL free agency chaos after Geno Smith’s release, offering the veteran quarterback a job in the middle of an awkward career moment.
The brand is known for posting sharp jokes online, and this one landed almost immediately after Smith hit the market.
It also gave one of the offseason’s more surprising NFL moves an even stranger twist.

Wendy’s piled into the conversation with a tongue-in-cheek offer for Geno Smith once news of his release broke.
“Geno Smith in case things don’t work out in free agency, we’re looking for a Chief Tasting Officer…,” the brand tweeted.
The post quickly spread because it hit that familiar Wendy’s tone, playful, shameless, and perfectly timed for social media.
It also stood out because Smith is not some fringe player trying to hang on. He is a veteran starting quarterback who only recently looked like a major part of the Raiders’ plans.
That is what made the joke land so hard. A quarterback expected to command real attention in free agency was suddenly being offered a fast-food title instead.
Why Geno Smith was released by the Las Vegas Raiders
The timing of the joke mattered because Smith’s exit from Las Vegas was one of the biggest quarterback developments of the week.
The Raiders are moving on after just one season, ending a brief spell that never really stabilised. Smith had arrived with experience and credibility, but Las Vegas clearly decided a reset made more sense than running it back.
The move also reflects where the franchise is now. With the team holding the No. 1 pick and facing major decisions at quarterback, releasing Smith opens the door to a different plan rather than another year of uncertainty.
That makes Wendy’s post more than just a random gag. It arrived at the exact moment Smith shifted from established starter to one of the most interesting names on the free-agent board.
For Smith, the joke will not matter much if another team sees him as a useful short-term answer. For everyone else, it was a reminder that NFL roster news now turns into content within seconds.
