Okay, we are going to take a trip down Tin Foil Hat Boulevard and just bluntly ask the question — “Is it possible that Julian Nagelsmann harbors a grudge against Bayern Munich?”
To be clear, we are not accusing Nagelsmann of any misdeeds, but his tenure at Bayern Munich did end in massively embarrassing fashion — on a ski trip, during an international break, all while finding out through the media.
It was a colossal debacle, which painted Nagelsmann in a terrible light, despite probably making Bayern Munich somehow look worse. Nagelsmann is a professional, but this was (or at least felt)…personal and, conceivably, it could make even the most even-keeled person a little resentful.
What we do know is this — both Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade consulted Nagelsmann before making a decision and both opted to take a pathway to England. That does not mean that Nagelsmann had an evil look on his face, rubbed his hands together, and laughed maniacally after advising Wirtz and Woltemade to bypass Bavaria.
However, Nagelsmann is human and was dumped in a terrible way. Maybe he did not saying anything negative about Bayern Munich, but it is absolutely possible that he did not exactly endorse the club either.
Of course, the circumstances were different for both players, Wirtz was deciding against domestic dominance and stardom for a team that offered him a shoddy plan (despite having years to plan for this moment) vs. a big test in the EPL for a team that knew exactly what it wanted to do with him. Meanwhile, Woltemade actually wanted to join Bayern Munich, but could not due to VfB Stuttgart’s refusal to sell to Bayern.
Before his Newcastle move, Woltemade’s conversation with Nagelsmann included advice that he should secure at least 25% playing time if he moved to Bayern Munich to ensure he would be in the mix for the 2026 World Cup. That might have been tough to get once Jamal Musiala returned, but it mighty not have been impossible (if Woltemade was productive).
That playing in time is also not really guaranteed at his new club, despite the massive transfer fee the Magpies paid for him. You can see, though, how Nagelsmann’s advice could have at least made Woltemade think twice about his options and his future.
Maybe it was revenge or maybe he just gave his genuine opinion, but how Bayern Munich treated Nagelsmann will always make us wonder just a little bit if the coach can ever really be objective when discussing the club again after it ran him through the ringer.
If he was still a little bitter, would you blame him?
Bavarian Podcast Works — Special Edition: Bayern Munich’s Transfer Window Review and Ratings
Bayern Munich’s summer transfer window is over, but the assessments can now finally begin.
There were big acquisitions, important sales, and devastating misses. This transfer window pretty much had it all, so let’s break it down.
Song of the Week: “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin
Some days you wake up and it’s a Led Zeppelin day. This was one of them.
Released in 1973, “The Ocean” became a staple Zeppelin song for most rock stations and eventually classic rock stations. If you are radio surfing, there is a good chance that you’ll bump into it, but why not get it at BFW as well. Enjoy:
Atalanta didn’t even respond to Bayern for Lookman
Late in the transfer window, Bayern Munich attempted to get Ademola Lookman from Atalanta with a lowball offer and the Italian club…did not even respond per Fabrizio Romano (via @iMiaSanMia):
Bayern tried to sign Ademola Lookman and made a loan bid with a €28m option to buy. Atalanta didn’t even respond to the bid, they didn’t consider it at all. Bayern didn’t even get a rejection. Atalanta didn’t indicate a price but the feeling was that they might accept around €50m (permanent or obligation to buy). It was impossible for Bayern to sign Lookman on the proposed terms.
It is hard to discern exactly what Bayern Munich might have been thinking with such a low offer, but the Bavarians definitely did not read the market correctly on this one.
The 27-year-old did not ultimately move on from the Serie A side and could be available again in January.
