HILLSDALE COUNTY — Multiple double-digit strikeout games were recorded in Hillsdale County prep baseball in Week 4, including some dominant efforts by athletes like Connor McKay of North Adams-Jerome, Setzer Burnett of Pittsford and Devan Herendeen of Jonesville.

It was a busy week for the Rams in North Adams, especially for senior ace Connor McKay. McKay picked up his second win of the season in a 11-1 final over Waldron. For over four innings, McKay pitched a clinic against their rival Spartans. The senior allowed just three hits, one earned run, and struck out 10 batters.

After a tough start to the week against Britton Deerfield, the Pittsford baseball team bounced back with an 8-4 win over Litchfield and a 3-2 win over Waldron. The two rivalry victories were showcases for an impressive Wildcat bullpen. Setzer Burnett got the win against Waldron, throwing seven innings and striking out 10 batters. Despite the seven hits, impressive fielding helped Burnett keep the earned runs to just one.

Pitchers Jake Drawe and Hunter Peiffer combined to help the team beat Litchfield with 16 shared strikeouts. Read more about that unique pitching moment at hillsdale.net. Ethan Pickford fanned eight in a 5-3 loss to Deerfield.

The Jonesville Comets continue to look like district contenders with a 7-4 overall record. They added a 14-2 win over Reading and a 4-2 win over Grass Lake to reach that mark. Jonesville junior Devan Herendeen remains undefeated after earning his fourth win in the 4-2 final against Grass Lake. The junior ace gave up just one earned run on four hits, striking out nine. He is up to 40 strikeouts this year.

It was a tough week for the Camden-Frontier RedHawks, losing two of their three matchups. However, pitching ace Jayden Martinez picked up the win on the mound in a 6-3 final over Camden-Frontier. Martinez had 10 strikeouts, three hits and just one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. He also had a double-base hit. Luis Thilo had three strikeouts in relief.

Week 4 Best Batters​


Pittsford's two wins last week showcased multiple stats leaders. Hunter Peiffer had five hits, including three doubles and three RBIs in two games. Ethan Pickford had five hits, one RBI and four runs. Brendan Nave had just one hit, but Nave also scored four runs and had seven stolen bases.

The Rams' 11-1 victory over Waldron was led by a three-hit, one RBI and two run effort from third basemen Nolan Paradine. Paradine had a triple and two doubles. Kaleb Hale had a big week in two separate wins for North Adams-Jerome. In the 14-8 win over Tekonsha, he had four hits (including a double and triple), three RBIs, three runs and four stolen bases. He also had two hits against Waldron and an RBI.

In Jonesville's 14-2 win over Reading, Drew Bradley had two base hits, two RBIs and two runs. He was one of two batters who reached the same mark, the other being Marshall Baker. Ethan Hammer fell short of the same mark by just one run. Bradley added another hit and run in a 4-2 win over Grass Lake and two more in a 9-2 loss to the Warriors in game No. 2.

The Reading Rangers added two wins with a 12-2 final over Tekonsha and a 6-5 final over Barry County Christian. Drew Elder had a strong batting effort with three total hits (including a triple), two runs and an RBI. It was a well-balanced effort by all Ranger athletes. Will Elder had three total hits, three RBIs, three runs and three stolen bases.

The Waldron Spartans had three losses last week, but senior Alec Shamplo had two double-base hits and four total hits, two RBIs and two runs. He added five strikeouts in two appearances on the mound.

Hillsdale baseball had four tough losses in doubleheaders against Madison and Pennfield. However, the Hornets got a 11-8 win over Napoleon at the beginning of the week. Tyson Duff had two hits, two RBIs and three runs to lead the stat line. Senior Wyatt Wahtola had two hits, one double, one RBI and two runs. Senior Jace Lennox hit a triple and scored a run. Lennox had six runs this week. Duff led the batting effort with five hits alongside Wahtola. Ben Champion had five RBIs in Week 4.

Other Winning Pitchers​

  • Hillsdale - Six Pitchers: A combination of Tydan Bible, Noah Davis, Andrew VanWormer, Wyatt Wahtola, Ben Champion and Luke Webster combined to take down Napoleon in a 11-8 final. Webster and VanWormer both had three strikeouts. VanWormer was credited with the win.
  • Jonesville - Marshall Baker: Marshall Baker earned nine strikeouts against Reading in five innings, giving up just one earned run.
  • North Adams-Jerome - Desman Lawless: The Rams pitcher had 12 strikeouts in a 14-8 win over Tekonsha. He also had two hits and an RBI. Against Waldron, Lawless had two-hits, three runs and five stolen bases.
  • Reading - Drew Elder: The senior threw 3 1/3 innings in a 6-5 win over Barry County Christian. He had four earned runs on three hits and struck out seven batters. Will Elder was credited the save with two strikeouts over two innings.
  • Reading - Keven Denison: Denison threw three strikeouts in a 12-2 win over Tekonsha. He gave up just one earned run, and Chase Anderson was credited the save with two strikeouts.
