I’m not sure what I expect from Matthew Golden in year two, but I think I have a lot of good company when I say that I expect his 2026 season to be better than 2025.
What does “better” actually look like? More counting stats, to be sure, but beyond that point is where I start getting a bit stuck. Because stats don’t tell the whole story, but stats are a big reason we all seem to think Golden had a disappointing rookie year.
And, to be fair, the stats were disappointing, but I think that’s a symptom, not a cause. Golden’s rookie year was sent off track first by getting thrown into the deep end early (due to injuries to Christian Watson and Jayden Reed), and then by not really having a defined role once those players started to come back. Throw in a lingering injury of his own in the back half of 2025, and I think that looks like a pretty solid recipe for a disappointing rookie year.
But fixing those issues is more complicated than just making his receiving numbers bigger. Finding a role is a challenge for all young players, and Golden will have to find his in a receiving ecosystem that features (hopefully) a healthy Christian Watson, a healthy Jayden Reed, and, eventually, a healthy Tucker Kraft.
That’s no easy feat, but the extent to which Golden is able to do it will probably define his 2026 season. Does that add up to a better year than 2025? We’ll have to wait and see.
