Jefferson Rojas, the Chicago Cubs' No. 1 prospect, delivered the game-winning hit for the Knoxville Smokies to take Game 1 of a May 23 doubleheader against the Montgomery Biscuits.
With Alex Ramirez on second base in the eighth inning, Rojas roped an RBI single to right-center field to secure the Smokies' first win of the series af Covenant Health Park. Ramirez and Rojas combined for four of Knoxville's six hits in the game.
The game was scheduled for Friday, May 22, but an early rainout pushed it back to Saturday. Knoxville led 1-0 when play resumed in the bottom of the second inning May 23.
Owen Ayers hit an RBI single to score Ramirez the night before, which was the Smokies' lone run until Rojas' eighth-inning single.
Xavier Isaac opened Saturday's scoring with an no-doubt blast into the Modelo Watering Hole in right field, bringing the Biscuits and Smokies to an even 1-1 score in the fourth inning.
Knoxville's Brooks Caple and Montgomery's Chris Clark carried out a classic pitcher's duel in relief. Caple, who reopened the game May 23 for starter Jake Knapp, pitched six innings and allowed five hits. He struck out four batters and did not surrender a walk.
Clark kept the Smokies from scoring through 4.1 innings, allowing Knoxville to earn just two hits and a walk.
The Smokies and Biscuits begin the second game of the doubleheader at 7:20 p.m. May 23.
The Cubs' newest top-ranked prospect, came through when it mattered most. After being held hitless in his first three at-bats, the Smokies' third baseman delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning to secure Knoxville's first win of the series.
The Smokies are 22-20 on the season after taking the win in Game 3 against the Biscuits.
