Because the Los Angeles Dodgers are loaded with talent, are the two-time defending World Series champions and have led the MLB standings for most of the summer, it is easy to call Tarik Skubal the cherry on top of this magnificent sundae. Making such a claim threatens to undersell his importance, however. The 29-year-old left-handed starting pitcher is not merely a sweetener. Skubal might just be the man who keeps this towering empire intact for another season.
And now he has arrived. The two-time American League Cy Young Award recipient and 2024 Pitching Triple Crown winner joined the team during Sunday night’s series finale versus the seemingly unstoppable Boston Red Sox, stepping into the dugout in uniform as the newest member of the Dodgers. Fans were visualizing Skubal in blue well before LA acquired him in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, but now they actually get to see the fantasy become a reality.
It has been almost three months since Blake Snell or Tyler Glasnow has taken the mound in an MLB game, and while they are each nearing a return, their recurring injury problems cannot be ignored. The Dodgers’ rotation stayed intact last year, but the unit was quite shorthanded in 2024. Even a stacked bullpen like the one Los Angeles boasts could tire if it carries too big of a burden. Skubal can ease the pressure of other hurlers and produce a huge impact in the front end of the rotation.
The stellar southpaw greeted his teammates and shared a nice embrace with manager Dave Roberts. He understands what it means to join this powerhouse, and the Dodgers recognize the elevating effect that Skubal can have for the remainder of the season.
He is scheduled to pitch in Wrigley Field on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, but Tarik Skubal is already planting roots in Chavez Ravine.
