In case you missed it, former Ohio State basketball star Bruce Thornton absolutely balled out in his NBA Summer League debut with the Houston Rockets. All he did was pour in 27 points, grab three rebounds, dish out three assists, and get three steals on defense. It was the most points a Rockets rookie has ever put up in an exhibition debut, and it put the NBA on notice that Mr. Thornton might have a very productive NBA career. Of course, one game does not a career make, but it's better than the alternative.
Thornton was asked about his game after the contest, and he came ready with what his game brings to the court, despite being undersized. It was that, and his perceived lack of explosiveness to separate, that gave some NBA executives and scouts pause, and why he slipped to the first pick of the second round in the NBA draft. Judging by what he was able to do on Friday night, though, it appears some guys can just ball.
Bruce credited his work ethic for how he separates himself at any level when asked about his performance.
"I can compete. I can hoop," Thornton said. "Even though I'm undersized, I give it everything I got. I'm from Fairborn, Georgia, and that's how we play. I just put it out here and displayed what I can do."
Thronton went on to credit his teammates and coaches and talked about being in shape to play great defense as well, something we hope he can show the rest of the NBA how to do. You can listen to the short interview thanks to the video shared by the "Ohio State Hoops" X account, and look forward to more moments like this as Thornton continues his basketball career at the highest level.
Thornton should be in action again Saturday night when the Rockets take on the Toronto Raptors in Las Vegas, Nevada. We'll have anything noteworthy that comes out of that.
