Around two months left to go in the offseason, plenty of time remains for NBA players to hit their stride. August and September are the boring months for fans, but the downtime is when guys across the league develop the most. You're seeing that happen with Chet Holmgren and Jared McCain.
Holmgren and McCain recently linked up in Los Angeles. Both were part of the PLYRS UNTD run that featured several NBA players. Other notable participants include Trae Young, Jaren Jackson Jr., Trey Murphy III, Michael Porter Jr. and Ty Jerome.
This is usually the time of the year when NBA players coordinate get-togethers. That allows them to test off their new skills against NBA competition in controlled environments. In Holmgren's highlights, you can see the seven-footer work on his pull-up jumpers. Meanwhile, McCain sharpened up his isolation skills.
Both will play important roles for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2026-27 regular season. While Holmgren had a breakout year as an All-NBA player, his poor outing in the Western Conference Finals left a sour taste in most fans' mouths. And McCain is hoping to build off a productive second year that saw him swish NBA homes midway through.
The Thunder enter the 2026-27 season as co-title favorites. Alongside the San Antonio Spurs. Holmgren's ascension as an All-NBA player has helped with that. After saying goodbye to a handful of longtime role players, McCain could benefit from the vacuum of possessions up for grabs.
