After a solo home run from Avery Fantucci in the second inning and a two-run shot from Jenissa Conway in the third inning, the Washington Huskies found themselves in an early hole against the Michigan Wolverines, which put their 14-game winning streak in jeopardy.
However, after Ella Stephenson reached on a fielder's choice to extend Michigan's lead to 4-0, Washington's pitching staff bared down when Morgan Reimer took the circle in relief. Reimer allowed just one batter to reach over the final 4 innings on a walk while she struck out five Wolverines as the Huskies came storming back for a 7-4 win, giving the sophomore her 16th win of the season, moving her into a tie for the nation's lead with Florida's Keagan Rothrock.
Reimer's performance picked up starter Ryan Maddox, who surrendered 3 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks over 2 innings of work, before she was relieved by freshman Allie Thomsen, who let up a run on a hit and a walk in one inning.
At the plate, the comeback was fueled by a three-run home run off the bat of right fielder Sophi Mazzola that just snuck over the wall in left field, which sparked coach Heather Tarr's lineup as it put together 12 hits in the win.
Third baseman Giselle Alvarez, who went 3-for-4 on the day, knotted up the game later in the fourth inning with an RBI double, before shortstop Melody Acevedo, who also went 3-for-4 and added a pair of runs scored, blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Huskies the lead for good.
Haley Ferguson took the loss for the Wolverines, which dropped her to 1-1 on the season after she let up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout over 1 2/3 innings.
The Huskies improved to 25-6 on the season and 8-0 in Big Ten play with the win, and they'll look to sweep the Wolverines on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. PT.
