A trip to Palo Alto, California, was not kind to coach Heather Tarr and the Washington Huskies, who went 1-3 over their four games following an 8-4 loss to the No. 24 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday afternoon.
With ace Morgan Reimer getting a day off after throwing 165 pitches in UW's 3-2 loss to Saint Mary's on Friday, Tarr turned to Arizona transfer Ryan Maddox in the circle, who the Huskies got an early 4-0 lead for. An early run-scoring double from third baseman Giselle Alvarez and an RBI single from freshman Ally Hetzel put the Huskies up 2-0 in the first inning, before center fielder Kaycie Burdick tacked onto the lead with an RBI single of her own in the second inning.
Then, Burdick got caught stealing at second, but allowed right fielder Sophi Mazzola to score from third base on the play to put the Huskies up 4-0 early in the game and give Maddox a nice cushion. However, from that point on, it was all Cardinal.
Stanford took control of the contest in the bottom of the third inning, putting up five runs in the frame, led off by back-to-back solo home runs from second baseman Addyson Sheppard and left fielder Sydney Boulaphinh before Maddox was lifted for Rylee Rehbein. The Montana transfer was charged with the loss after working 2 1/3 innings and letting up 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout.
While the Huskies were able to put together 11 hits in the contest against the Cardinal pitching staff, they couldn't get anything else going in the late innings. Ava Bulanti earned the win for Stanford after she worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings and let up 3 hits with 2 strikeouts, as Washington has now lost three of its last four games and suffered back-to-back losses for just the second time this season.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 31-9 on the year, and now they'll return to Seattle for a three-game series with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, which is set to begin on Friday, April 10, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
