The second trade for the Washington Nationals has materialized ahead of the trade deadline.
First baseman Luis Garcia Jr. has been traded to the New York Yankees in exchange for four right handed pitchers - Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert and Jake Bird.
Garcia, 26, was scratched ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Atlanta Braves with all eyes on whether the Nationals would ultimately pull the trigger on a deal.
Garcia marks the second National to depart during the season after Washington sent third baseman Curtis Mead to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for left handed pitcher Connelly Early. Yet it does not come as a total surprise given Garcia was also mentioned as one who drew trade interest ahead of the deadline, specifically from the Red Sox.
Garcia was on pace for a career season after already marking a new career high with 21 home runs and 76 RBIs in 2026.
He arrived with the organization as an international free agent signing in 2016 before making his debut against the Baltimore Orioles in 2020. Across his seven seasons and over 700 games played with the organization, Garcia owned a .268 batting average with 81 home runs and 345 RBIs.
Where the Nationals now turn to at first base the rest of the regular season is unclear, though Brady House, who was promoted following Mead's departure, was spotted practicing at first base ahead of the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 27. Andres Chaparro replaced Garcia in the lineup before getting hit in the head, leading House to replace him in the fifth inning of Sunday's loss. Garcia also departed midway through Friday's loss after the team announced he suffered right knee soreness.
Despite both CJ Abrams and Foster Griffin also drawing interest through the trade market, all the signs pointed to Garcia as the most likely trade candidate after drawing interest from several teams on Sunday including the Houston Astros and Red Sox alongside the Yankees. The move also comes as the Nationals sell high on the first baseman, while the organization remains strong in the infield across the farm system with prospects like Eli Willits, Devin Fitz-Gerald and Gavin Fien among others.
Whether this becomes the final trade is the question for a Nationals' front office that has expressed a willingness to become both a buyer and seller at the trade deadline, though the four-game sweep at the hands of the Braves in Atlanta dampened already longshot odds at becoming a postseason contender.
