The Washington Huskies football team will have several positions they'll attempt to sort through during summer training camp and practices. One of those positions will be running back.
The Huskies are looking for a new primary ball-carrier after last year's leading rusher, Jonah Coleman, was selected in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. The team's running back with the second most rushing yards, Adam Mohammed, transferred to Cal in the offseason.
Entering spring practice, it was expected that sophomore running back Jordan Washington, who was the third running back on the team's depth chart as a redshirt freshman last year, would be the front-runner to earn the starting job.
Washington opened spring practice receiving the majority of the team's first-team reps in the backfield.
During the first padded practice April 4, Washington was carted off the field with an apparent head/beck injury in an ambulance after he was stiff-armed to the turf following a tackle attempt on an interception return.
The sophomore running back was at the team's spring game in a neck brace May 1.
Following the team's spring game, head coach Jedd Fisch said that the team would reevaluate his status in July to determine his availability for summer practice and the upcoming season.
Fisch spoke the media at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday at the Hilton Chicago, and confirmed that it's unlikely Washington will play this season.
The third-year UW head coach also said that Washington's still hopeful to play football again and will have another check-up with a surgeon. The running back is still undergoing physical therapy to rehabilitate his injury.
Washington replied to a fan on his official "X" account, saying "Nah, something exciting is going to happen. Great staff and players put together. Have faith!"
Last year, Washington ran 27 times for 233 yards and a touchdown.
When Washington went down, sophomore running back Quad Carr Jr. took the majority of reps with the first team. He'll compete with transfer running backs Trey Cooley (Troy), Jayden Limar (Oregon) for the starting running back role. Both Cooley and Limar were out for the spring rehabbing from respective injuries.
If Carr is able to maintain the form he had in the spring, he could potentially be the top running back going into and coming out of summer practice.
Class of 2026 running backs Ansu Sanoe and Brian Bonner Jr. could also earn game-time reps depending on their respective performances in the summer. They received reps in the spring with the aforementioned injuries to Cooley, Limar and Carr.
