The Washington Huskies women's basketball team is currently practicing in attempts to have its best season in a decade.
The Huskies improved their roster by acquiring talent via the transfer portal and earned a commitment from four-star guard Amayah Garcia. In addition to those new player,s UW also retrained All-Big Ten guard Sayvia Sellers, conference All-Freshman forward Brynn McGaughy and Big Ten honorable mention guard Avery Howell.
The hope is that Washington will be able to meet or exceed where it was last year, where the team was eliminated in the Round of 32 with a 72-69 overtime loss against the TCU Horned Frogs.
March's tournament was the first tournament win for the Huskies since 2017, where it was guided by the greatest player in program history, Kelsey Plum.
Plum helped lead Washington to its only Final Four appearance ever. The hope is that the current UW women's basketball team will be able to meet or exceed that point this season. While her alma mater is attempting that, Plum will be looking to add another international accolade to a long list of that.
Plum, who was recently traded from the Los Angeles Sparks to the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, was listed as one of 12 players for Team USA's FIBA Women's World Cup roster. The international tournament is set to begin in September.
The five-time WNBA All-Star has long been a fixture on U.S. team's during international competitions, and has a closet full of medals to show for it.
Across her career, Plum won the gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, a gold medal at the 2022 FIBA World Cup, another gold at the 2018 FIBA World Cup, a silver medal in the 2015 Pan American Games, a gold medal in the 2013 FIBA U-19 World Cup and a gold medal in three vs. three basketball in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Team USA will be looking to win a fifth-consecutive World Cup gold medal.
Plum, who missed several games this season due to a soft tissue injury in her leg, is in the midst of her best season from a statistical perspective. She's averaging 23.3 points per game on 53.4% shooting (39.3% from 3-point range) across 14 contests (13 starts). She's also averaged 6.1 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per contest.
During her time in college in the Pacific Northwest, Plum was the Associated Player of the Year (2017), two-time All-American (third-team in 2016; first-team in 2017), Pac-12 Player of the Year (2017) and a four-time All-Pac-12 selection (2014-17).
