The Washington Commanders used their rookie minicamp to find some veteran depth on the offensive line. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the Commanders are signing offensive tackle Tyre Phillips.
The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Phillips was a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2020 NFL draft out of Mississippi State. He spent two seasons with the Ravens, starting 13 of the 22 games he played. He also dealt with injuries in Baltimore and was waived during final cuts before the 2022 season.
Phillips signed with the New York Giants and spent the 2022 season there, appearing in 12 games with five starts. He was released just before the 2023 season, re-signed to the practice squad, and released again. The Philadelphia Eagles signed Phillips to their practice squad. The Giants signed Phillips off Philadelphia's practice squad one month after he signed with the Eagles. He'd start in nine games for New York in 2023.
Phillips did not sign with a team in the 2024 offseason and returned to the Giants late last season, appearing in three games.
He was among the few veterans in Ashburn for the Commanders' rookie minicamp. We mentioned him as a player to watch in our rookie minicamp preview. Phillips faces an uphill battle to make Washington's roster. The Commanders suddenly have solid depth all across the offensive line. However, it's worth noting that Phillips has started at tackle and guard, which could help him this summer in training camp.
