So the talk of the NFL this week is the low ranking Lamar Jackson received this week on the NFL's Top 100. Last year, Jackson was ranked No. 2 on this list. This year, he was ranked a shocking 67th.
ESPN's Ryan Clark is wondering where all the disrespect is coming from.
“Outside of Patrick Mahomes, there is no more accomplished quarterback in the entire NFL individually,” Clark said during his appearance on ESPN’s First Take. “There’s no quarterback who carries more than Lamar Jackson. There’s no quarterback who’s asked to do more than Lamar Jackson. There’s no quarterback who you have to have a game plan for in the run game.”
“It’s not just disrespectful, it’s almost stupid that he is ranked so low and I don’t know if he cares about it at all, but this says a lot about this league and how quickly we forget what Lamar Jackson has accomplished.”
Just last year, Clark brought race into the equation as an explanation for why Jackson was disrespected, but he was called out by several prominent black NFL analysts for that take.
Is it really about race, or is it about accomplishments? Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen have all made it to the AFC Championship Game at least once, and two of the three have made it to the Super Bowl. As talented as Lamar Jackson is, he's only done that once and has yet to make it to the Super Bowl.
Now you can make an argument that Jackson may be better than Allen because neither one has won a Super Bowl, and Jackson has won two MVP's, but Allen has taken the Bills to the AFC Championship Game twice. Is it an unfair comparison? Probably so, but until Jackson can get over that hump, his accomplishments during the regular season mean nothing.
Peyton Manning went through the same thing. Manning didn't garner any real respect until he beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and won a Super Bowl. Until Jackson at least makes a Super Bowl, he will probably lack the respect he deserves.
