The Golden State Warriors were without Stephen Curry against the Philadelphia 76ers – and a step too slow for their younger, bigger, bouncier opponents.
With Curry sidelined in a black sweatsuit, the Warriors (27-24) were overmatched and outmuscled in a 113-94 loss at Chase Center in their final game before the NBA's trade deadline Thursday. Golden State committed 29 turnovers that led Philadelphia to 15 points, was outrebounded 55-34 and outscored 54-30 in the paint.
Gui Santos and Pat Spencer scored a team-high 13 apiece for the Warriors, for whom four-fifths of their starting lineup (Moses Moody, Al Horford, Draymond Green and Brandin Podziemski) lost its minutes by 20-plus apiece.
VJ Edgecombe led the 76ers – down star big man Joel Embiid and wing Paul George – with 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Big man Andre Drummond added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Warriors mitigated 11 first-half turnovers with 10-of-22 shooting on threes on their way to a 58-55 halftime deficit. Post and Horford made two apiece for half of their eight first-quarter threes – opened via ball and player movement.
The 76ers (29-21) opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run and won it 27-24, seizing at one point a 15-point lead. But Golden State closed it with a 17-5 run that De'Anthony Melton capped with a crossover dribble and finish in traffic.
Philadelphia opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to seize control as the Warriors started to sputter offensively without their primary shot creators. As Golden State shot 6 of 21, Edgecombe and Maxey punctured the paint to put the Warriors at an 84-71 disadvantage that stretched to 22 in the fourth quarter.
They start a two-game trip Thursday against the Phoenix Suns.
