Potentially enticing LeBron James to the Bay Area has long been a dream scenario for the Golden State Warriors' fanbase. With the veteran forward recently entering the unrestricted free agent market, a lot of speculation has placed Golden State among the front-runners to potentially land LeBron's services in what could be his last season in the NBA.
However, according to Marc Stein, via his Stein Line newsletter, Golden State may not lead the charge for LeBron this summer. In fact, a return to where it all began with the Cleveland Cavaliers may still be the most logical choice for the veteran superstar.
"James has been spotted in Northeast Ohio multiple times over the past week, which has only amplified the notion that he is indeed strongly weighing a third stint with the Cavaliers," Stein reported. "Yet there is certainly a growing belief among teams competing for James’ signature that the lure of the 41-year-old playing out his final chapter with the team that drafted him — compared to, say, early favorites Golden State — is looking more and more like the scenario to beat."
LeBron will be entering his age-41 season once the 2026-27 campaign gets underway. Nevertheless, he's still one of the top-20 players in the league. During what turned out to be his final year with the Los Angeles Lakers, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists, shooting 51.5 percent from the field. Pairing LeBron with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green would be an ideal situation as the trio continues to pursue success in the twilight of their careers.
While the Warriors may or may not be leading the race to sign LeBron, they're certainly in the mix. Still, Mike Dunleavy Jr and Joe Lacob would be wise to have a "Plan B" just in case LeBron does choose to take his talents elsewhere this summer.
