The Golden State Warriors retained a guard early in free agency, and lost a guard in free agency.

Pat Spencer is headed to the Phoenix Suns on a two-way deal.

In 66 games last season with the Warriors, Spencer started 14 contests and averaged 7.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 42% from the field and 35% from three on 2.5 attempts per game.

Spencer has only been in the league for three years, but will turn 30 years old on July 4.

He played basketball and lacrosse in college. He went undrafted and headed overseas to play in Germany in 2021 before joining the Washington Wizards' G-League team, the Capital City Go-Go, in October 2021.

He signed with the Warriors G-League team in 2022 and made his NBA debut in February 2024.

Losing Pat Spencer

Spencer proved himself to be a high-effort player who brought energy on both ends of the floor off the bench. He had a career-high 20 points against the Phoenix Suns on February 5, 2026.

He showed improvement in each of his first four seasons, earning more playing time and opportunities from Steve Kerr and the coaching staff.

He proved to be a good shooter from midrange, knocking down 46% of his shots from 10-16 feet out. On a team that was struck with big injuries to Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler, Spencer was a bright spot as the Warriors struggled to keep pace in the Western Conference.

Despite his flashes of scoring, he wasn't a great defender and lacked consistency on a team that often lost its identity without Curry.

Replacing Pat Spencer

The Warriors re-signed De'Anthony Melton, who is a better player and a better fit than Spencer. He battled injuries last season, but if he's healthy, he'll always play over Spencer as the backup point guard. Melton averaged 12.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists last season.

They also have Will Richard under contract, who showed similar flashes of offensive strength last season while being six years younger. He averaged 6.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 69 games.

While Spencer is on a two-way deal with the Suns, it's unknown what kind of offer the Warriors would have made, and if it was on a guaranteed contract, that could have taken potential money away from their chase for LeBron James.

Spencer became a fan favorite in the Bay through his hard work and should be loved in Phoenix for those same reasons.
