GRAND JUNCTION, Co. (WJHL) – In a chaotic, nine-inning Grand Junction special, fourth-seeded Walters State outlasted seventh-seeded Seminole State 16-15 to open the JUCO World Series on Saturday morning.

The two teams combined for 31 runs, 33 hits, and five home runs in a back-and-forth contest that Walters State coach Dave Shelton compared to a heavyweight boxing match.

The Senators scored in every single inning, building leads of 9-3 and 14-9, but the Trojans refused to go away. After Walters State took a 15-11 lead into the ninth, Seminole State rallied to score four runs in the top of the frame to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Drew Blalock led off with a single, and pinch-runner Brady Dalton advanced to second on a botched pickoff attempt. Miles Shore then hit a deep fly ball to right-center field. Though the right fielder made a phenomenal catch, Dalton tagged up and sprinted all the way home to score the game-winning run.

Shore paced the Senators’ offense with a perfect 5-5 day at the plate, hitting three doubles, a home run, and driving in four runs. Blalock also homered in the game, marking his 31st of the season to tie the program record. On the mound, Lane Sharp earned the win in relief after pitching Walters State out of a late jam.

Walters State will return to Sam Suplizio Field on Monday evening at 6 p.m. MT to face top-seeded Johnson County.
