Why is this a surprise to anyone?
Once he hurt his calf we should know it’s not a quick recovery.

Doubtful. He was a situational role player at best to start the season.

Nolen won’t be a factor until the back third of the season. Even then its a maybe.

I doubt he’s a “factor” at all. He won’t be able to practice for four weeks (I’m prepared to be wrong about this) and then he’ll have the opportunity to ramp over a couple weeks.
He’ll be unlikely to be in football shape before Halloween. He’ll get rotational snaps for sure this year, but lower your expectations on impact.

The Arizona Cardinals are placing rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen (calf) on the PUP list to start the season.
Question is… Lower expectations from what baseline.
Rookie DTs, even the most talented ones, rarely see the same number of snaps as veterans. Jalen Carter, arguebly the best DT in the league only played 48% of snaps as a rookie over all 17 games.
Byron Murphy, the top DT last year, only played on 40%
The optimistic baseline for Nolen was IMO 45% if he played in all games. Realistic baseline would be 30-40%

IMO that is prolly high. We have a ton of serviceable or better IDL. Even if he works out he likely wasn’t going to be as good as Campbell, Collier, Robinson, and Stills this season.

Unfortunately agree- Nolen missing so much time doesn’t bode well for him contributing this year. We are cursed by a calf yet again! So damn unfair
most rookie DT's are not much of a factor anyway...even if healthy all year. Most guys take time to adjust to the fact that players in the nfl are not only more skilled, but much stronger, than the guys they faced in college.
I checked some numbers last year or something...our boy Dante Stills, a 6th rounder...had a more productive and impactful rookie season than Quinnen Williams...a top 5 pick............ but, I think I would still rather have Quinnen now, lol...once he adapted he became everything draft gurus expected him to be.
it will likely be the same for Nolen. Minimal impact this season regardless...but he will learn enough to know what to do in the off season

When we make the playoffs, Nolen should be a big contributor. And in GREAT shape.
Jared Verse is technically an OLB but he played 74.8% of defensive snaps and won rookie of the year and was tied for 5th amongst all players with most QB pressures.
It’s just the Cardinal way for our 1st rd pick to miss significant time. Until proven otherwise, he is D Rob and isn’t impacting jack-squat this year. It could be week 12 before we see him.

Don't mind him staying on PUP, was expected with a deep room. It's a deep room and gives them some weeks to assess Justin Jones (maybe he plays well) and move him if they think they can do without him.
In an ideal world Jones plays 100-120 snaps in rotation, gets a sack and couple of TFL's and a handful of pressures and makes some team give up a 5/6 for him.
