Myles Colvin scored five points to open overtime and help Wake Forest hold off Virginia Tech 95-89 in overtime in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday in Charlotte.
Colvin finished with 13 points on the night, but none more important than a short floater and a three-pointer in the opening minutes of overtime that pushed Wake Forest's lead to 80-75 and gave the Demon Deacons a cushion they would not relinquish.
Sebastian Akins led Wake Forest with 14 points off the bench, going 5-for-7 from the field and converting 4-of-4 free throws. Juke Harris added 10 points and a game-high six rebounds to go along with four assists. Tre'Von Spillers contributed 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including two alley-oop dunks that energized Wake Forest during a critical second-half stretch.
Mekhi Mason came off the bench to score 10 points, including two key three-pointers in the final three minutes of the first half that helped Wake Forest carry a 38-34 lead into the break. Omaha Biliew added 10 points and 4 rebounds.
As a team, Wake Forest shot 51% from the field and converted 27-of-30 free throws — a 90% clip that proved decisive in overtime when Virginia Tech repeatedly sent the Demon Deacons to the line.
Ben Hammond led Virginia Tech with 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including four three-pointers that kept the Hokies competitive throughout. Jailen Bedford finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, and was the catalyst behind the Hokies' late second-half comeback. His 27-foot three-pointer with 2:45 remaining in regulation tied the game at 71-71 and set the stage for a frantic finish.
Tobi Lawal posted 12 points and 9 rebounds for Virginia Tech, while Jaden Schutt added 15 points off the bench on 3-of-7 shooting, including a pair of clutch three-pointers in the final five minutes of the second half and overtime.
Despite the strong performances, Virginia Tech's shooting let them down at critical moments. The Hokies shot just 41% from the field and 33% from three, and were outrebounded 28 to 45 — a margin that gave Wake Forest repeated second-chance opportunities throughout the game.
Wake Forest will play Clemson on Wednesday night in the second round.
