Jan. 5—WAGNER, S.D. — Wagner High School senior girls basketball standout Ashlyn Koupal broke the school's all-time scoring record on Saturday and moved into the state's top-25 for girls basketball scoring.
Koupal, a 6-foot-3 guard/forward, scored 38 points and added 17 rebounds, nine assists, seven blocks and a steal in the Red Raiders' 62-44 win over Avon. The game brought her to 2,088 career points, passing her aunt, Mandy Koupal, who had led Red Raiders' all-time list since 1999 with her 2,065 career points.
As of Jan. 5, Ashlyn Koupal ranks 25th on the all-time girls scoring list with 2,088 points. The state's all-time record is held by Mitchell Christian's Jill Young, who ended her career with 3,317 points in 2007.
For the first five games of the season, Koupal is averaging 29.8 points and 15 rebounds per game. She scored 42 points, a Wagner single-game school record, in a victory over Winner on New Year's Eve. Koupal reached the 2,000-point mark for her in Wagner's lone loss of the season on Dec. 20 at Lennox.
Koupal signed her national letter of intent to play college basketball at the University of Nebraska in November and was named to the national Naismith Trophy preseason girls high school player of the year watchlist before the season. She ranks as the No. 10 nationally in the class of 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports and is the No. 3-ranked power forward in the country. She took part in USA Basketball's Junior National Team minicamp in 2025 at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida.
The Red Raiders (4-1) are next in action when they host Ethan at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.
