The Class A high school baseball and boys tennis seasons just came to an end, while the softball and track and field regular seasons wrapped up.

Here are the nominees for the Argus Leader's high school Athletes of the Week for May 18 to 23. ArgusLeader.com readers vote to decide this week's winner. Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

Athletes are listed in alphabetical order by last name.



Boys​

Jackson Hancock, Sr., Harrisburg​


Hancock closed his Harrisburg career with a SDHSAA Class AA singles state championship and a second-place doubles finish. Hancock bested Mitchell's Asher Dannenbring 6-0, 6-1, Brandon Valley's William Jensen 6-4, 6-1, and Sioux Falls Lincoln's 6-3, 6-1 to win the second flight singles title. He and Alexander Rallis beat Mitchell 6-0, 6-0, and Sioux Falls Washington 6-2, 6-1, before losing 4-6, 6-4, 10-12 to O'Gorman in first doubles.

Will Koziara, Sr., O'Gorman​


Koziara won a pair of tennis state championships this week, taking top honors in both the singles first flight and doubles first flight. He beat Rapid City Central's Anson Griffin 6-1, 6-0, Brandon Valley's Eli Woidyla 6-0, 6-3, and Sioux Falls Lincoln's River McKenzie 6-2, 6-2 in singles. Koziara and John McDowell beat the Yankton team 6-0, 6-1, Sioux Falls Lincoln 6-4, 6-4, and Harrisburg 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.

Taylor Melby, Sr., Brandon Valley​


Melby was named tournament MVP at a SDHSBA Class A state tournament that was dominated by pitching. Melby went 8.1 innings over the two days, allowing one run on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts. He picked up the win in a complete game over Sioux Falls Jefferson in the state semifinals.

Angalia Niyomwungere, Sr., Sioux Falls Washington​


Niyomwungere had a big showing at the Howard Wood Last Chance Meet on Thursday, May 21, coming in first in the triple jump and second in the long jump. The senior jumped 43 feet, 7.5 inches in the triple jump and had a 21-foot, 3.75-inch leap in the long jump.

Maxwell Peters, Sr., Brandon Valley​


Peters had multiple clutch plate appearances for Brandon Valley in a state title-winning weekend. He finished the weekend going 2-for-8 with two walks, a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.

Girls​

Baya Carlson, So., Sioux Falls Jefferson​


Carlson took full advantage of the Howard Wood Last Chance meet, setting herself up with a personal-best effort in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared 12 feet to win the event.

Alexis Fey, Sr., Harrisburg​


Fey had a dynamic week after being one of Harrisburg's top hitters all season. The senior went 6-for-10 with a double, two home runs, eight RBIs and five runs to help the Tigers finish the regular season 18-1.

Sydney Stahlecker, Jr., Tea Area​


Stahlecker upped her stock as one of the top sprinters in the state at the Howard Wood Last Chance Meet. She ran a personal-best 12.18 seconds in the 100-meter dash to win the event before the state meet.

Paige Stensaas, Jr., Sioux Falls Lincoln​


Stensaas had an explosive last week for Sioux Falls Lincoln, helping the Patriots finish the regular season 11-9. The junior went 7-for-8 at the dish with a double, two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Allie Wallum, Jr., Tea Area​


Wallum helped Tea Area win two of three games to end the regular season and elevate itself before the SoDak 16. The junior catcher was 8-for-10 at the dish with three walks, a hit by pitch, a double, three RBIs, five runs and a stolen base.
