The dominoes are beginning to fall at Virginia. Just days after the team surprisingly fired head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, star junior Kymora Johnson will reportedly enter the transfer portal, according to On3.
Johnson, a junior, led Virginia with 19.5 points and 5.9 assists per game last season. Her efforts helped the team upset Georgia and Iowa in the first two rounds of the 2026 NCAA tournament before the team fell to TCU in the Sweet Sixteen. Johnson scored 28 points in both the first and second rounds of the event, leading Virginia in scoring in both of its upset wins. She put up 18 points in the team’s loss to TCU.
The news comes shortly after the team fired Agugua-Hamilton. That move came as a surprise initially, especially with the team coming off a shocking run in the tournament. But reports emerged following that firing that Agugua-Hamilton was under an internal investigation due to allegations of staff mistreatment. In four seasons at Virginia, Agugua-Hamilton put up a 70-58 record.
Johnson performed like a star since the moment she took the court at Virginia. As a freshman, she started all 32 for the team, averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 assists. Since then, she’s made gradual improvements to her game, seeing her points, assists and steals totals rise in every season with the program.
It’s unclear whether that reported investigation or Agugua-Hamilton’s firing played a role in Johnson’s decision to reportedly hit the transfer market. Given her ability, Johnson should draw plenty of interest from teams now that she’s available.
