Vince Wilfork's reservations with the Pro Football Hall of Fame go beyond this year's omission of former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Wilfork played for Belichick in New England for 11 years from 2004-14. The four-time All-Pro defensive tackle won two Super Bowls with the latter in 2004 as well as 2014. Wilfork was also teammates with three-time AP NFL MVP Tom Brady for all of those years.
According to MassLive Sports' Karen Guregian, on Thursday, Wilfork became the latest player to criticize the Hall for not voting Belichick in, but took things a step further by questioning whether or not Brady will be a first-ballot entrant due, in part, to a pair of well-documented controversies:
“You can’t have one set of rules for one set of guys, and another for another set. Are we talking about something personal, or are we going to keep it to the facts? So now I’m wondering are they going to do the same with Tom (Brady)? … Let's not play that game," Wilfork said.
This was the first year that Belichick was eligible to enter the Hall of Fame. "Spygate," as well as "Deflategate," the two controversies in question that took place in 2007, as well as from 2016-17, respectively, were labeled as reasons why the three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year was forced to wait at least a year to see Canton. The scandals will also be associated with Brady when his name gets called for consideration.
Brady is up for induction for the first time in 2027. The Hall requires all players to have been retired for at least five years before being eligible for consideration. The seven-time Super Bowl champion retired with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.
