Vikings rumor pinpoints possible veteran quarterback option for Minnesota originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Minnesota Vikings need to add a veteran quarterback to their roster behind J.J. McCarthy.
The former No. 10 pick struggled mightily last season and was the biggest reason for Minnesota missing the playoffs, which is why the Vikings need, at the very least, an insurance policy for McCarthy.
A report from ESPN's Kevin Seifert suggests the Vikings may decide to bring in a veteran starter to replace McCarthy entirely, as "all bets are off" as far as his future goes after Minnesota fired its general manager.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini did not go that far, but she did say the Vikings "will" add a veteran quarterback at some point to compete with McCarthy, and the belief in league circles is Kirk Cousins might be the guy.
"Speaking of those Vikings, one league source speculated that Cousins could be an option there, given his history with Kevin O’Connell and Minnesota’s desire to bring in competition for young J.J. McCarthy," Russini reported.
Cousins makes sense for the Vikings. He's already familiar with head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense and is good enough to push McCarthy and take over and win games if the young signal-caller falters.
The problem, Russini notes, is that the Atlanta Falcons might need Cousins and could look to keep him, as Michael Penix Jr.'s status for the start of the season remains up in the air after he suffered a partially torn ACL in 2025.
We also know Cousins has a relationship with new Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was Cousins' offensive coordinator in Minnesota for one year.
Whatever the Falcons decide to do, they need to make a decision on Cousins by March 13, when $67.9 million becomes guaranteed for 2027 if he's still on the roster.
The expectation has been that the Falcons will simply release Cousins, which would obviously be ideal for the Vikings because they can get Cousins for a cheaper price and without having to give up draft capital.
The Cousins-Vikings pairing just makes too much sense and we would put that as the most likely approach Minnesota will take to shore up its need behind McCarthy.
