No offseason acquisition was more significant for the Minnesota Vikings than Kyler Murray. Their hope was that his inclusion would raise the floor of the quarterback room and that competition would help get the most out of J.J. McCarthy.
So far in OTAs, it appears that both things are true. McCarthy has made strides, but it does appear that Murray may be poised to run away with the job.
Whether or not this holds true through camp and preseason, no other position battle on the Vikings is more important than the one at quarterback, says Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox.
Murray has plenty of reasons to be engaged this season. He is on a one-year deal, providing himself the opportunity for a massive contract if he performs well in 2026.
Still, McCarthy needs to continue improving in case he is needed. Minnesota has started at least three quarterbacks in two of the past four seasons. Murray has started only one full season over the past four years.
Regardless of who wins, the Vikings know they need better quarterback play in 2026. If they get that, a return to the playoffs could be in place.

The Vikings are hoping that improved quarterback play can lead them back to the success they had in 2024. McCarthy will have a chance to rebound from a disappointing 2025 campaign, but he'll have to beat out former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, who was added on a one-year deal in free agency.
