It is news that may seem jarring to Minnesota Vikings fans, but it seems this was the next step in the process for both the team and safety Harrison Smith.
At the start of the new league year at 4:00 p.m. EST, it was reported by The Athletic's Alec Lewis that Smith is being released. It is a move that will have a post-June 1 designation and the team, and Smith are in contact and on good terms. He adds, "This is procedural. Harrison's decision for 2026 remains up in the air. The team would welcome his return. This allows him more time. All sides have been in contact & in agreement."
Smith has been with the Vikings his entire NFL career, going back to when he was drafted out of Notre Dame in 2012.
Smith's coming back will likely be decided before the NFL Draft, as that is where the team is likely to find a replacement instead of free agency. They had been linked to former Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook, but he ultimately signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. Either way, the Vikings' safety position should be okay; it just depends on whether it will be with Smith or someone else.
