The Minnesota Vikings signed veteran WRJauan Jennings to a one-year deal. It’s an $8 million contract with incentives that could push the total value to $13 million.
Jennnings is entering his sixth season after five good years with San Francisco. His big breakout was in year four when he was able to take advantage of some additional playing time after Brandon Aiyuk was placed on the IR. Jennings recorded 77 catches for 975 yards and 6 TDs. He followed that up with lower yards (643), but 9 TDs as he cemented himself as a go-to Red Zone target.
Jennings immediately steps into the WR3 role for the Vikings. He brings a physical presence that has been missing at times. Justin Jefferson can hold his own, but he isn’t the blocking, possession-style receiver that Jennings is. Jennings is an excellent run blocker, and in an era where we see a lot of tight ends that look like wide receivers, he’s a wide receiver who looks like a tight end.
I can see him opening up opportunities for former 49ers teammate and now current Vikings running back Jordan Mason. They both saw their biggest opportunities at similar times in San Francisco, when injuries sidelined players like Christian McCaffrey, Aiyuk, Elijah Mitchell, and others.
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing Jennings in purple. I’ve always liked big possession receivers. T.J. Hockenson hasn’t consistently produced at the level the team hoped, and Jennings could absorb some of those short-yardage and red-zone targets. Kyler Murray will benefit from having a reliable, physical target they can trust when plays break down.
