New England Patriots rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas has yet to step onto the practice field with the team in an official capacity. But that doesn't mean that he's off on a beach somewhere sipping on Piña Coladas while the rest of the team works out, either. The second-round pick out of Illinois has been hard at work preparing his mind and body for the 2026 season.
He is currently the only second-round pick that hasn't signed his rookie deal. It has quickly devolved into a messy situation that has created more questions than answers.
ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that Jacas is believed to have been dealing with multiple injuries during the offseason, including a knee injury, a hamstring injury, a labral shoulder tear and a stress foot fracture. Despite injury concerns, according to Reiss, "two sources from different NFL teams said their clubs gave Jacas a passing grade on his physical exam."
The belief is that Jacas would be ready to participate in training camp this year, and it's easy to come to that conclusion after watching the rookie in action in a recent Instagram video uploaded by sports trainer Marcus Howard.
One high-ranking official, per Reiss, insisted that the Patriots might be pushing for financial protection in Jacas' contract.
There was also a report that the Patriots haven't given Jacas a participation agreement, which is a temporary contract for unsigned rookie draft picks. It's an agreement that assures a rookie, if he is injured ahead of signing his first NFL deal, that he would still get the same contract he would have received when healthy, based on draft status.
Without Jacas, the Patriots are down to Harold Landry III, who has been banged up, Elijah Ponder, Dre'Mont Jones, Jesse Luketa and Bradyn Swinson. The fact that they haven't made an additional move at the position could signal the team's confidence that they'll eventually come to a resolution with Jacas.
The clock is ticking with training camp a little over a month away.
