SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — San Angelo’s 26th annual Wake The Desert weekend concludes after three days on Sunday, July 12.
Local Concho Valley crowds gathered once again at Lake Nasworthy Sunday to witness the final day of wake surfing and wakeboarding where performers continued to showcase their talents on the water.
Similar to the previous two days, Sunday’s schedule featured a complex lineup of events for competitors. This covered all areas of skim, surf and wakeboarding among advanced, intermediate and expert levels. The day ended with an award ceremony when all first, second and third place winners were announced. A handful of young novice athletes stole the show too.
“I wake boarded today, yesterday and the day before that,” 10-year-old wakeboarder Jerzee Otho said. “I did really good jumps and I got first [place].”
Despite scattered storms later in the afternoon, the weather didn’t affect the mindset of wake surfer Heidi Neal.
“It doesn’t rain a lot, so it’s pretty different,” Neal said. “But the water’s really nice because it’s smooth on our lake.”
Simply put, the point of the watersport is to have fun, according to wakeboarder Rory Alexander.
“It’s super fun,” Alexander said. “I like wakeboarding. I competed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”
