Venus Williams appeared at her fourth tournament of the year earlier this week, exiting again in the first round.
This one may have been the most disappointing. She fell to Ajla Tomljanović, a player who’s struggled for consistency and who, fittingly, ended Serena Williams’ career with a win at the 2022 US Open.
Venus was ahead in both sets but couldn’t close either out. Still, seeing her on court remains a positive sight for tennis fans, no matter what the scoreboard says.
And she made sure to speak with reporters before leaving Austin. The questions naturally turned to Serena and whether she might play again.
One reporter didn’t shy away from asking directly about how likely it was that we’d see Serena back on tour this year.

The question came directly: could fans look forward to seeing Venus and Serena back together on the doubles court soon, now that Serena has completed her six-month return process in the anti-doping testing pool?
As expected, Venus wasn’t about to reveal much.
She said: “Oh, man, wouldn’t that be cool? I never see her practising! So, I don’t know where she’s doing it, so.
“I think to come back, you have to get out there, so we’ll see if she can put some work in. I mean, of course, playing for exercise is nice, you know?
“Yeah, there’s a lot of hours that go into it, so we’ll see what happens.”
Venus Williams’ concerning form
Venus Williams’ run of poor form has raised some eyebrows, with many questioning her place in the draw.
She has been knocked out in the first round of all four tournaments she has played this season, and the same story goes for her doubles appearances as well.
At 45 years old, just her presence on the tour is astounding. However, it’s sad to see Venus struggle to be competitive and actually win matches, especially when she has shown glimpses of being able to challenge on occasion since making her more regular return to tennis.
If things don’t turn around soon, there will surely be more questions about how long she plans to keep going at this pace.
