Late in the first half of the ReliaQuest Bowl, Vanderbilt (10-2, 6-2 SEC) committed a mistake that you just don't see every day. In fact, you may have never seen something like this before.
With Iowa (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) leading Vanderbilt, 7-3, in the final minute of the first half, the Hawkeyes backed the Commodores up into a punting situation from their own 15-yard-line.
On the 4th-and-27 snap, Vanderbilt graduate punter Nick Haberer rolled to his right before punting the football away. It was almost as though Haberer thought he might take off and attempt to run for a first down on the fourth-and-forever situation.
There was one major problem, though. Haberer punted the football beyond the line of scrimmage. The illegal punt essentially worked as a turnover on downs and it was a 5-yard penalty, so the Hawkeyes took over first-and-goal from the Vanderbilt 10-yard-line.
Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski promptly lofted a 10-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Reece Vander Zee. Vander Zee toe tapped for the score to put Iowa in front 14-3 at halftime over Vanderbilt.
