Vanderbilt men's basketball commit Gabe Nesmith is planning to reclassify to the 2026 class and join the Commodores this season, according to reports on July 19.

Nesmith, a five-star wing from Atlanta and a cousin of Indiana Pacers guard Aaron Nesmith, had been ranked No. 21 overall in the nation in the 2027 class, according to 247Sports Composite.

Nesmith will join coach Mark Byington's unit as the third-highest rated recruit in program history, after Los Angeles Clippers guard Darius Garland (No. 11) and forward Simisola Shittu (No. 8) committed in 2018.

Vanderbilt-bound Top 20 recruit Gabe Nesmith intends to reclassify and join Mark Byington’s team for this season, source told @TheFieldOf68.

Absolutely loved the 6-5 wing this past week. Great size, can score from all 3 levels. Should be a nice addition and someone that can…

"Nesmith is a multi-talented prospect with both athletic gifts and a deep bag of individual offense," according to a 247Sports scouting report on a May 24. "Standing at 6-foot-5 with a measured 6-foot-9 wingspan, he has both positional size and long arms. He's a bouncy vertical athlete who can rise-up at the rim for some explosive, and sometimes acrobatic, dunks."

Vandy assembled a top 25 recruiting class with the offseason additions of Oak Hill wing Ethan Mgbako, four-star recruit Anthony Brown and four-star center Jackson Sheffield.

In the transfer portal, the Commodores signed four-star Auburn forward Sebastian Williams-Adams, Missouri guard T.O. Barrett, Washington State guard Ace Glass and fellow-four stars Bangot Dak (Colorado) and Berke Buyuktuncel (Nebraska).

Byington is known for trusting his bench and utilizing different bodies depending on the matchup, but It remains to be seen how Nesmith will fit next to star guard Tyler Tanner in Vandy's talented mix of scoring and athleticism.
