Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year defensive back Pat Surtain, No. 2.
Before the Broncos: Surtain was a member of legendary head coach Nick Saban's Alabama juggernaut squads from 2018-20, winning a national championship in 2020. In 41 games with the Crimson Tide, Surtain made 117 total tackles (82 solo, 35 assisted, six tackles for loss), forced four fumbles, recovered two fumbles, snagged four interceptions (including one for a touchdown) and 27 pass deflections, including an FBS-leading 12 deflections in 2020, resulting in an All-American nod.
Broncos tenure: After 2020, Surtain was widely considered the best cornerback in the 2021 NFL draft, and was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Denver Broncos. Surtain was immediately thrust into action, picking off four passes in his rookie season, returning one for a touchdown. In 2022 and beyond, Surtain became one of the best ballhawks in the NFL, with seven interceptions. Surtain was named first-team All-Pro in 2022 and 2024, becoming a perennial Pro Bowl player along the way.
His masterpiece came in 2024, when he picked off four passes for 132 yards, and one interception returned for a score. For his efforts, Surtain was named AP Defensive Player of the Year. Last year, Surtain missed several games due to injury, but still started 14 games. Surtain finished with one interception, 12 pass deflections and 47 total tackles (37 solo, 10 assisted, one tackle for loss) in 2025.
Chance to make the 53-man roster: Lock. There is no player more cut out to be a leader in the 2026 iteration of the Broncos than Surtain. In 2025, Surtain made a Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro in a down year. If he can play in all 17 (plus?) games in 2026, Surtain could easily return to contention as the league's top defender in 2026.
