Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the verge of his biggest breakthrough yet, as he prepares to complete another historic milestone in his rise to superstardom. Cricket News' Jamie Alter explains.

Few cricketers have generated as much excitement in recent months as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old batting sensation has enjoyed a remarkable rise, dominating the IPL, collecting multiple individual awards, and then reminding everyone of his extraordinary talent by smashing the fastest fifty in List A cricket to help India secure a series victory last week.

Now, the teenager finds himself on the verge of an even bigger milestone.

Having earned his first call-up to the senior Indian team, Sooryavanshi could make history by becoming the youngest men's international cricketer to represent India. If he is selected for the opening T20I against Ireland on Friday, he will surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest Indian men's debutant in international cricket.

It is a tantalising prospect for fans and a fascinating selection challenge for the Indian team management.

Unlike many young prospects who enter a team with obvious vacancies, Sooryavanshi is attempting to break into one of the strongest batting line-ups in world cricket. India's top order appears largely settled. Sanju Samson arrives as the reigning Player of the World Cup, while Abhishek Sharma continues to enjoy the confidence of the selectors and coaching staff. Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, has been one of India's most consistent white-ball performers this year.

Further down the order, Shreyas Iyer's return has added another layer to the equation. Back in the T20I setup and entrusted with the captaincy, Iyer is expected to occupy the crucial number four position.

How does Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fit in for India?

That leaves India with a difficult question: where exactly does Sooryavanshi fit?

Do the selectors and team management reshuffle an already successful batting order to accommodate a once-in-a-generation talent? Or is this tour primarily about exposing the youngster to the demands of senior international cricket before handing him an opportunity later in the season?

The signs, however, suggest that his debut may not be too far away. The BCCI's decision to allow Sooryavanshi's parents to travel with the squad has only strengthened speculation that India could be preparing for a landmark moment.

And few would argue that the teenager has not earned such consideration.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stats

Sooryavanshi's game is built on a rare combination of power, fearlessness and exceptional hand-eye coordination. He may not always be the most technically polished batter, but his ability to dominate white-ball cricket at such a young age has been extraordinary.

The records already attached to his name underline that reality. He is the youngest centurion in List A cricket, owns the fastest fifty in the format, and holds the record for the highest score in an Under-19 World Cup final.

His IPL campaign only enhanced his reputation. Amassing 776 runs at a staggering strike-rate of 327, he almost single-handedly propelled Rajasthan Royals into the playoffs and established himself as one of the most destructive batters in the game.

Whether his India debut comes this week or a little later, Sooryavanshi's trajectory appears clear. He is one of the most exciting young cricketers the country has produced in years.

If he takes the field against Ireland, history will be made. If he has to wait a little longer, it is unlikely to delay what promises to be a very special international career.
