It was the shot of the series by a 15-year-old batter who looks set to light up the game for the next quarter of a century. Seeing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shimmy down the track, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza cleverly dragged his length back. However, the teenage sensation adjusted superbly to launch the ball a staggering 102 metres over wide long-on for a six. The delivery wasn’t in his arc or ideal hitting zone, but the left-hander had already made up his mind to clobber it.
After three ordinary outings against England, Sooryavanshi has made a statement on India’s tour of Zimbabwe, heralding a new chapter in his fledgling career. On Sunday, the precociously talented youngster smashed 81 off 49 balls, studded with eight fours and four sixes, to propel India, who opted to bat first at the Harare Sports Club, to 192 for five in the third and final T20I — a dead rubber. Zimbabwe finished on 157 for seven. Mayank Yadav claimed three for 29 in four overs to finish with five wickets at 14.40.
With five overs remaining, Sooryavanshi needed 19 more runs for his maiden international hundred. But Brad Evans produced a brilliant diving catch after sprinting in from long-off to dismiss him off Wessly Madhevere. Sooryavanshi signed off as the series’ leading runscorer with 151 runs at 50.33 and a phenomenal strike rate of 196.10.
