U.S. women’s national team head coach Emma Hayes has named a 26-player roster for the team's January friendlies against Paraguay and Chile.
The USWNT will gather on Jan. 17 to begin camp at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., which will serve as the venue for a Jan. 24 match against Paraguay.
The team will then travel north to face Chile at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Jan. 27.
Hayes has named a highly inexperienced roster, with the players on the squad averaging just 6.6 caps. There are five uncapped players on the roster – including four first-time call-ups.
“Once again, our roster presents opportunity, for the coaching staff to evaluate players and for some NWSL players we haven’t seen as much in the national team environment, as well as for some first-time call-ups, to show they can contribute in 2026, 2027 or beyond,” said Hayes.
“We’re looking forward to having a few more training days than usual in this camp as well as getting two matches to see this part of the player pool in game action and hopefully add even more depth and options for our 2026 SheBelieves Cup roster.”
The most experienced player on the squad is Trinity Rodman, who we'll highlight first in our three thoughts on the USWNT's January roster.
Trinity Rodman looked like she would make her USWNT comeback in October, when she was named to the team's roster for the first time since April after dealing with a back injury.
But Rodman quickly suffered another injury, spraining her MCL in a game with the Washington Spirit. The forward managed to return in a limited capacity for the Spirit's run to the NWSL championship game, but was left off the USWNT's roster for friendlies against Italy in November and December.
Rodman — who is listed as unattached on this roster after her Spirit contract expired — is once again back for the USWNT, a welcome sign that she has returned to full fitness.
While the drama surrounding her club future continues, Rodman will be the elder stateswoman on this roster at the ripe old age of 23.
Rodman is the most capped player on the squad with 47 international appearances. Yazemeen Ryan is second with just 15.
The January camp falls outside of a FIFA window, meaning Hayes has omitted the growing European-based contingent of USWNT players like Catarina Macario, Alyssa Thompson, Naomi Girma, Emily Fox, Lindsey Heaps and Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
In addition, Gotham FC players were unavailable for selection due to the club’s participation in the 2026 FIFA Women's Champions Cup in England at the end of the month. Likely call-ups such as Emily Sonnett, Rose Lavelle, Lilly Reale and Jaedyn Shaw won't be heading to California.
All the absences have offered a chance for four new faces to the USWNT: Maddie Dahlien (Seattle Reign), Reilyn Turner (Portland Thorns), Riley Jackson (North Carolina Courage) and Sally Menti (Seattle Reign) are all receiving their first USWNT calls.
None of the four are strangers to the national team program, though. All of them have logged extensive minutes with the U.S. at the youth international level.
There is also a return for Spirit midfielder Hal Hershfelt, who earned the most recent of her three caps in 2024, and NWSL-based left backs like Izzy Rodriguez and Kate Wiesner.
The race to be the USWNT's starting goalkeeper continues into 2026, despite Alyssa Naeher's international retirement at the end of 2024.
Hayes may have preferred to have a starter nailed down by now, but that isn't the case after a year in which four different goalkeepers started games for the USWNT.
After Tullis-Joyce appeared to be the frontrunner in the summer, Claudia Dickey made a strong case in the fall and winter with her play for club and country.
Dickey was statistically the best goalkeeper in the NWSL last year, and started five of the USWNT's last six games of the year — keeping clean sheets in four of those matches.
With Tullis-Joyce unavailable for this camp, Dickey will have another chance to prove that she should be Naeher's long-term successor.
