USMNT's Auston Trusty gets honest about World Cup hopes originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
U.S. men's national soccer team defender Auston Trusty made an honest admission about his hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup in a recent interview. He also confessed that Lionel Messi had something to do with his signing for Scottish champions Celtic.
Trusty, 27, spoke with The Athletic about his career in general and shared his ambitions around the World Cup. The defender acknowledged that he has always dreamed and continues to dream of playing in the most important tournament in international soccer.
"As a kid, I would sit in my room and picture all the games I play in now," Trusty told the cited outlet. "Like the World Cup. I spent so much time thinking about playing in one, and I still do it. Picturing what it'll look like if I'm there. I guess it is manifesting."
He added, "It helps because sports are very emotional, and if you take the emotion out and just have that core of backing yourself, combined with the familiarity of having 'seen it' in your dreams, it works. Then the more you get the real, lived experience, you just get stronger and stronger."
Auston Trusty reveals Lionel Messi secret about his Celtic signing
In addition to addressing the World Cup topic, Trusty also spoke about his current club, Celtic FC, the recently crowned champions of Scotland.
While explaining how his signing for the Hoops came about, Trusty made a curious revelation, telling that when he was in negotiations with the club, they sent him a pamphlet with key information about the team, including quotes from Lionel Messi about the atmosphere at Celtic Park.
He said, "When you're in talks, they send you a pamphlet called 'Why Play for Celtic.' It is all about how great the club is, the atmosphere, and what it means to people."
"I was already pretty sure I wanted to come, but it definitely cemented it even more. There are quotes from Lionel Messi about how incredible the atmosphere is at Celtic Park," Trusty added.
A champion and a key figure for Celtic, the USMNT star is ready to represent his nation at the World Cup. We will see if he makes manager Mauricio Pochettino's squad, but to tell the truth, it is almost a guarantee that he will.
